Cyber Security : Things Small Business Owners Need To Know About

Things Small Business Owners Need To Know About Cyber Security

Cyber attacks on the small businesses are a growing and real issue now and in most of the cases, the business owners are not prepared. The small businesses mostly fall into the hackers’ cyber security as they have more digital assets to target as well as have less security than any large company.

Employee training is one of the main factors of cyber attacks as in most of the cases; the harmful viruses are spread through emails. By spreading through the infected email attachments, the viruses encrypt the files stored on network drives and therefore threaten to corrupt or delete the files. In this case, proper employee training about the emails that are okay to open can protect a company from all these threats. So, staying vigilant is the most important thing to do in this case as the ability of the hackers to access information increases as the technology advances.

So, irrespective of your business size, it is a must to have the right cyber security plan. Besides, it is also better to invest in the cyber liability insurance as well as to implement one accident response team with some response protocol. Besides, it is also necessary to read the contract agreements always before clicking yes. Apart from that, it is important to back up all the data while having a proper data recovery plan.

Here are a few important steps that the business owners must take into consideration about cyber security of your business:

• No download from unknown sources: Make it a rule to not download any file from any unknown sources.

• Update the operating system on a regular basis: This is highly important when new security patches are available. Most of the computers do this automatically. So, it is necessary to check whether yours does or not.

• Check the firewalls: To ensure complete security, make sure every security feature is updated on all the machines.

• Use one virtual private network or VPN: The VPNs connect you to the World Wide Web with one encrypted connection so that the data that are being shared on the web can’t be seen by anyone from the third party. The VPN providers also offer secure data connection between your network and remote workers that is very much helpful if you send workers into that field.

• Use updated virus protection service on all devices: Keep the virus protection service updated and current on all the devices whenever new patches become available.

• Use strong passwords: Weak passwords always roll out the red carpet for the hackers to get inside the systems.

• Make sure that the mobile devices that you are using for work are secure: Never store important passwords on the mobile device. Always learn the ways to use the “remote capability” on the tablets and phones and in case you’re mobile operating system includes one “kill switch”, which only allows the device owner to reboot it and also learn the ways to activate it. Generally, these don’t get activated by default.
